Geography

The Kingdom spans wide distances and many different types of landscape. There are cities, fertile farmland, chalk downs, mountains, marshes, forests and wilderness.

It is important that we don’t run out of ‘space’ for new ideas and adventures, so geography in the Kingdom of Exiles is more of an art than a science! The world appears to be strangely fractal – distances stretch and shrink and places move according to the needs of GMs and players (in much the same way that all villagers look suspiciously similar). We ask that players are understanding and don’t worry too much if information from different GMs conflicts.

Everyone is welcome to come up with their own ideas for regions and places. All we ask is that you don’t try to enforce anything that impinges on other people’s work or ability to create new places, and that you generally stick to the ‘feel’ of the Kingdom if that’s where your area is set.

It’s also a good idea to check out the Beyond the Kingdom section, as while games run outside the Kingdom are infrequent they do occur.

Travelling

Because of the fractal nature of Kingdom geography, we usually describe distances in terms of time to travel, rather than length. A town will be described as ‘one hour away’ rather than ‘three miles away’.

The main mode of travelling in the Kingdom is on foot. ‘A day’s walk’ can be anything between 10 and 25 miles depending on who’s talking.

Horses are rare (as we can’t phys-rep them) and only owned by the very rich. Carts are typically pulled by oxen, stout ponies not suitable for riding, or similar beasts of burden. ‘A day’s travel’ in an oxen cart may be 8-15 miles depending on conditions.

The FRAWN (Fast Response Air / Weather Network) is a magical/miraculous means of transporting small groups of people between pre-prepared points on a network that covers some of the Barony. FRAWN travel is generally under control of the Defenders, and since the events that befell the Instant Response Service use has been heavily restricted (especially as it was originally two separate networks that were merged).

Maps

Various maps have been created by club members.

Remember that none of these maps are definitive as we want to stay flexible so that people can create freely. Distances and directions are prone to change as per the needs of players and plot!
